What Does the Bible Say About Wind?

Wind is found throughout the Bible. We read about how the wind moves and shifts things on the earth. We also read verses in the Old and New Testament about God controlling the wind.

In Genesis 8, God sends a wind that causes the flood waters to recede. In Exodus, the Lord uses wind to blow locusts in and out of Egypt, and uses a wind to destroy the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. And in the Gospels, Jesus rebukes the wind that’s causing a storm and it ceases immediately.

That doesn’t mean there’s always a spiritual meaning of wind, or that God is always the one controlling the winds on the earth. John 3:8 says “the wind blows where it wishes.” While it’s clear that God has control over the wind and can use it to accomplish His purposes, that’s not always the case.

Here are 18 Bible verses about the wind:

“But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded.”

Genesis 8:1 NIV

“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

John 3:8 NKJV

“When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.”

Acts 2:1-2 NKJV

“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”

Mark 4:39 NKJV

“He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap.”

Ecclesiastes 11:4 NKJV

“So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts…And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea. Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt.”

Exodus 10:13;19 NIV

“The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; My desire shall be satisfied on them. I will draw my sword, My hand shall destroy them.’ You blew with Your wind, The sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters.”

Exodus 15:9-10 NKJV

“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’”

Matthew 8:26-27 NIV

“He opened the heavens and came down; dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on the wings of the wind.”

2 Samuel 22:10-11 NLT

“The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants.”

Psalm 104:2-4 NIV

“For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 2:26 NKJV

“He released the east wind in the heavens and guided the south wind by his mighty power.”

Psalm 78:26 NLT

“Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is His Son’s name, If you know?”

Matthew 7:25 NKJV

“Better a handful with quietness than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.”

Ecclesiastes 4:6 NKJV

“Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone—as though we had never been here. But the love of the Lord remains forever with those who fear him. His salvation extends to the children’s children.”

Psalm 103:15-17 NLT
