Free From Lies

In John 8:32, Jesus tells us that the path to freedom is knowing the truth. There isn’t anything that you need to do to experience freedom; the truth is that you are free. Jesus made you free; that’s it. Jesus did it all, He said it is finished, not it will be finished. You can’t work to get more free than you already are.

So why then are so many people living in bondage? The simple answer is that they don’t know the reality of the truth. Jesus told us that we need to know the truth or we become deceived by the enemy’s lies. In John 8:44, Jesus says that the devil has no truth in him. When the devil lies, he is speaking his native language. The battle we face today is what we regard as true. The reality is we are free, but the devil will always lie to you about that.

I won’t give the devil more credit than he deserves. One of his lies is that he still has authority in the earth; however, the truth is that Jesus disarmed the forces of evil and made a public spectacle of them. Jesus publicly embarrassed the devil and took his authority from him on the cross (see Colossians 2:15). But since the devil is the father of lies, he doesn’t want you to know or believe that. The devil will come and test to see if you know what the truth is. He came to Jesus and found nothing in Him (John 14:30). When you’re full of the truth, there is no room for lies. Ephesians 4:27 says not to give the devil a foothold. The enemy can’t force his way in because he has no weapons, but we can give him an opportunity by opening the door.

The devil will continually feed you all kinds of lies, searching for something that gets you to open the door. He’ll entice you with sin, claiming that if you were a Christian you wouldn’t have those thoughts, or that God won’t notice. Then, he’ll return with more lies saying that you’re clearly not free. These may come across as something like this, “I thought you were a Christian, but you did that? See how you keep falling down? You’re still addicted. You were born with that tendency. You’re not worthy of that. You’re just a sinner. You can’t tell anyone about that problem. You’re going to struggle with that forever. You’ll never get promoted if you keep doing that. You’re the only one struggling with that. Other people are free, why aren’t you? Other people struggle with that too, it’s impossible to get free. Being a Christian put limits on your life.”

Stop listening to the lies.

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

1 Corinthians 10:23

One of the biggest lies of the enemy deals with what we do. He will tell us that we need to do something, or not do something. The devil can’t make you do anything. Again, Jesus disarmed him forevermore. The devil convinced Adam and Eve to do something. He said that God was holding out on them and they had to do something to get what God had already freely given them. Then in the New Testament, he told Jesus that He had to do something to prove Himself. “If you are the Son of God turn these stones into bread.” Matthew 4:3. “If you are the Son of God get off that cross.” Matthew 27:40.

When we attempt to prove the truth by our actions, it reveals our lack of knowing the truth. In Genesis 1:26, God created man and woman in His image and His likeness. The devil showed up with the lie that if Adam and Eve did this, then they would be like God. But the reality was they were already like God. They didn’t know that reality, causing them to be deceived. There are only two verses separating Matthew 3:17 when the Father says “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.” and Matthew 4:3 “If you are the Son of God do this.” Thankfully for us, Jesus knew what the reality was, so he didn’t fall for Satan’s accusatory statements.

Believing that you have to do this and that is not freedom, it’s bondage. Make the decision to stop believing the lies. You are free from every addiction. You are free from depression and anxiety. You are free from judgement, anger, and bitterness. When you know the truth, when you understand that your freedom is the reality, the result is a life of complete freedom!
